Please Don’t Eat the Daisies

I just want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who shared my last post "Dear Vintage Community." I typed that post with frustration and determination. I've been feeling quite heartbroken and hopeless lately but typing out the words that have been on my mind for years now felt like a release. I did not expect the positive outpour of shares, reads, and messages that I received. It made me realize that even with very little following, black voices are so important. I feel immensely grateful to all of you readers and hope that you continue supporting Gal Friday Vintage and other black women and men who hold spaces in this community.

With everything going on, my mood has been very up and down lately. But I have to say throwing on a fancy dress and stepping out has always had the power to lift my spirits. Who cares if it's just to the grocery store and people stare? When I slip on a favorite dress or a precious piece of jewelry, I feel ready to take on the day!

As stated in previous blog posts, when summer comes around I like to sport 1960s-70s looks. The fashions of that time frame have always felt summery to me. I look to Diana Ross, characters in Mad Men, Mary Tyler Moore, and Diahann Carroll for inspiration. Old TV shows like Julia, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Good Times, That Girl, and The Doris Day Show are some excellent shows to watch simply to get a glimpse of all of the fun fashions of the time. The bright colors, bold prints, and experimental styling provide a plethora of versatile looks!

For my outfit breakdown I will start with accessories because my new sunglasses are the star of the show! Last week I bought this fabulous pair of round sunglasses decorated with yellow-centered white daisies on them. Flower Child has been my go to for their unique retro and vintage glasses that they sell. I get so many compliments on them. They were only $18 and worth every penny! My purse is a vintage tapestry shoulder handbag that I bought a long time ago. I cannot remember where I purchased it, but I am quite certain I scored it a thrift shop. This purse is the perfect size for when I only want to carry essential items. It can also easily be turned into a clutch for evening wear.

My earrings are a simple dangly gold pair with small thick hoops at the end of them. I bought these retro looking earrings from Designer Consignor, my go-to shop for vintage jewelry.

This dress is one of my absolute favorites! It's a 1970s highlighter yellow long halter dress in a knitted poly blend. I absolutely love the delicate ruffling at the neckline and the knit on the bodice. The paneled seams creates a very cinched look which is a bit out of my comfort zone but I absolutely adore this dress! I found this little number for only $22 at one of my favorite vintage shops, The Bombshelter in Akron, Ohio. The minute I tried it on in the store, I knew I had to have it!

As I am awfully short and seem to have a love affair with long dresses, it is very hard to take shoe pictures. But my shoes were a simple olive green T-strap heel no larger than 3 inches because I am not the best at wearing heels!

An accessory that I've failed to mention but is of the utmost necessity is my mask. I do not photograph with my mask on but I own and wear a plethora of masks. My mask collection consists of two N-95 masks, a vintage comic book styled mask, a blue and white striped mask, and a floral mask. PLEASE wear your mask when you are out in public spaces especially in enclosed indoor spaces. It is a staple during this time my dears! Thank you for taking the time to read this Outfit of the Day post and I will see you next week for more GFV!
