A Megan Draper Summer
It's been awhile since I've had photographs taken of myself. With our current climate I did not have the energy and it seemed a bit silly to pose in front of a camera. But I realize that part of why I love this blog is that it can be both informative and provide a bit of escapism for a couple of minutes every Friday. Every Friday we can escape into this world of vintage style, old films, and grand home decor. I'll never forget when I was still living in New York City I attended an event that was all about Ella Fitzgerald at the legendary Schomburg Center in Harlem and at one point one of the speakers discussed how Ella's music was a form of revolt for the times. Her music was a form of revolt because for the most part she sung about the happier side of the black experience--falling in love, dancing, blue skies, etc. She provided a relief at times for the black listener to dance, swoon, and/or enjoy a great cocktail to. But note she was NOT complacent, her music was used to break racial barriers. So picture Gal Friday Vintage as the Ella Fitzgerald of blogs. This is a platform that showcases vintage black style and I hope that you all continue to enjoy these posts!
I spend a lot of time outdoors taking hour long walks daily which have been great for my mental health (and legs)! Last week I bought these reproduction white oversized heart-shaped sunglasses from Flower Child, one of my favorite local vintage shops in Cleveland, Ohio. I pretty much buy all of my sunnies from Flower Child as they have a wide range of vintage and reproduction sunglasses. Shoes wise I am wearing black wide strap sandals that have a small platform/heel to it making it ideal for long dresses as I am short and do not want my dress hem to drag on the ground. Unfortunately I do not remember where I purchased these sandals.
My handbag is a vintage 1950s basket weave purse with gold hardware that I accented with a vintage shamrock green scarf. This is one of my favorite summer purses! I carry it with me on the beach or pair it with summery dresses. This purse was gifted to me by my dear friend and mentor Heidi Korkosz. The scarf I found a long time ago at a thrift shop.
My nails were painted using Revlon's iconic "Cherries in the Snow," a cool fuchsia red. The color has been around since 1953.
This dress is one of my all time favorite dresses! This psychedelic dress is a vintage 1960s/1970s Lorraine labeled long dress made of polyester. It has a small flipped out collar and is slightly low-cut. The print caught my eye immediately! It is a wide psychedelic paisley-like print in shades of turquoise, green, purple, orange, and pink. This dress is unbelievably comfortable and glamorous looking. I purchased this beauty from Future No Future Vintage. I have a post on the vintage shop here.
I've been watching a lot of Mad Men (my favorite show of all time) lately and this look reminded me of Megan Draper whom I always try to channel during the hot summer days. (Well aside from Diana Ross which is always a given!) I've been opting for a purple eyeshadow lately to really get that late 1960s/1970s look! Sometimes I add a brown cut crease but opted not to on this day.
I hope you all enjoyed this Outfit of the Day post and I will see you next week!
