What To Do With Winter Blues?

winter1.jpg

I am going to be quite honest with you dear reader, winter brings out an overwhelming feeling of melancholy for me. I definitely get what I call the winter blues. I still struggle to fully combat it and lately it's been a bit worse than usual. While it may sound slightly superficial, one thing that helps lift my mood is a nice look (and of course a bit of jazz music). Grooming and putting myself together requires a little bit of effort and gives me time to focus my energies on something else other than my blues. I play my favorite tunes as I apply my lashes and wiggle into my stockings.

I have a small collection of vintage and thrifted coats for different degrees of coldness. This coat is NOT a vintage piece, but I thrifted this early 2000s Isaac Mizrahi coat for $14 at Salvation Army. It has a nice classic look with its grey tweed fabrication and fitted silhouette with a slight flare that begins at the hip. The coat also serves some practicality as it has functioning pockets and is fully lined. I wouldn't choose this coat in sub degree weather, but it's good for 30+ degree weather!

Lately I have been into wearing vintage hair nets! I bought this 1950s pink mesh hair net last summer for $2 at Chelsea's Costumes. I love the details of the net with its white polka dots and pretty satin ribbon to tie at the neck. Hair nets surprisingly keep my head quite warm. They also are GREAT for holding a curl or hairstyle in place--particularly on a windy day.

When it comes to gloves I stick to vintage. (I have a post on my vintage glove collection that can be viewed here.) Note, I typically wear the kind of glove probably best suited for driving and not necessarily winter weather, but oh do I love this style of glove so much! I love the soft pink color of this pair and the simple looped stitching detail. These gloves were gifted to me and are one of my favorite pair.

This gorgeous black 1950s handbag was purchased for $18 from Flower Child. This black beaded clutch is definitely more of an evening bag but I don't mind wearing evening for day. I love that this has the option to be a shoulder bag with its gold handle.

This dress that I'm wearing was purchased at a consignment shop (Avalon Exchange) for $20. I am OBSESSED with this very girly dress! The sweater knit fabric of the dress makes it super comfortable, but the detailing of the ruffled sheer lace panel at the hem and the opening at the sleeves with its bows really gives the dress its charm. I paired this dress with a pair of grey tights as I think a black tight would be too harsh against the soft pink. I am also wearing my black ankle boots that were showcased in a previous post.

Winter blues comes and goes, but it is very important to take good care of yourself when you're feeling particularly down. Even the smallest activities--like dressing up--can get your mind off of your worries or even cheer you up!

Hope you enjoyed this post and I will see you next week!!
