Glamour Girl Saviyance
Hello lovelies! I’m back with another spotlight post dedicated to one of the most glamorous women I know, Saviyance known as Pin Up Savi Monroe. I came across Saviyance’s fabulous YouTube channel years ago and we connected on social media due to our love of vintage and our desire to preserve black history. I am so happy to share with you this inspiring interview and hope that you enjoy!
Hello love! My first question for you is, how did you get into vintage and pinup style?
I was inspired by my great grandmother and the Old Hollywood stars we used to watch together, plus my great grandmother looked like Elizabeth Taylor. (She was) extremely glamorous and beautiful. I always wanted to be like her, she inspired my style. ❤️
Who are your biggest style inspirations for vintage?
My great grandmother, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Billie Holiday, Motown singers and burlesque dancers.
I absolutely love your YouTube channel and I’m always inspired watching your videos. Can you tell us a little bit about your YouTube channel and what made you create it?
I created it because there are no black pinup retro vintage channels out there for us. I wanted to create a space where black/Afro Latina women can do vintage style hair, makeup, and retro clothing. Not only that but vintage home decor, burlesque, and vintage music. 🎶 A lot of black vintage ladies don’t have a space that they can relate to.
Who are some of your favorite pin up models vintage and/or modern day?
I’d say one myself...because I’m my biggest fan. Also Bettie Page, Marilyn Monroe, black burlesque dancers, Dita Von Teese, Josephine Baker, Lena Horne, so many beauties. ❤️
I always like to ask this question: You’re at a classic 1950s looking bar, what cocktail do you order?
Martini 🍸 and champagne!
You speak up a lot about the issues within the vintage and pinup community. What are your thoughts on the pin up community as a whole and in what ways do you think it could be better or more unified?
Honestly my thoughts are: we need to respect each other and have each other’s back more. I feel we’re very separated and have a crabs in a barrel attitude towards each other. We don’t support each other enough.... and there are cliques with rotten attitudes. I’m very blunt and some ladies don’t like that but I tell it like it is and I like to speak up for others that don’t have a voice or are too shy to speak up.
I feel if we can just agree to disagree and enjoy the fashion, the beauty, and the rich history and truly support we can be extremely strong together as a community.
So much thanks to Saviyance for sharing her love of vintage and pin up, her thoughts, and inspiration with us today. I highly suggest subscribing to her YouTube channel and checking out her fabulous videos on vintage hair styles, makeup, books, and more. I also recommend following her gorgeous, girly, pink prominent Instagram account: @pinupsavimonroe.
