LBDs and Tiffany’s

I know I talk about Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) quite often and I am sorry if this is a film that you may think is overrated or a bit cliche, but I have so many sentimental ties to the film (there's a whole post about it here). My first time viewing the film was truly my introduction to a vintage lifestyle. I have watched many a fabulous old film at the movie theater such as, Casablanca (1942), Singin' in the Rain (1952), and Some Like It Hot (1959). But believe it or not, over the years I have never been able to catch Breakfast on the big screen due to schedule conflicts, costs, or being sold out.

Every August Cleveland Playhouse Square shows old films in 35mm for the entire month and guess how much the movie viewing was? $5! Needless to say, I snagged tickets within 15 minutes of seeing it advertised on my Facebook feed. I finally got the chance to watch my favorite film on the big screen and had to prepare for the occasion with an LBD and the excitement of a teenage girl.

When wearing a little black dress, one must properly balance wearing the right amount of accessories (or lack of). I can't help but think of Coco Chanel's quote: “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.” The dress should do all of the talking and the accessories should complement without overshadowing. I rarely wear heels but in honor of Audrey Hepburn, I opted for a kitten heel. This vintage pair (1990s) is in a luxurious suede with matching velveteen bows on the thick ankle strap. This is honestly one of the chicest and most comfortable shoes I own.

For a handbag, I decided to carry my small vintage floral printed tapestry purse with a gold chainmail shoulder strap. I kept jewelry very minimal by only wearing a pair of vintage rhinestone earrings.

This little black dress is one of my all time favorites. It is a gorgeous vintage black dress made of a stretch knit with gathered ribbing at the skirt. The sleeves, hem, and neckline are very textural being accented with stiff taffeta roses. I originally (naively) thought this dress was from the 1980s/1990s due to its modernity but after further investigation on the label, I now believe this dress is from the 1960s. It is labeled "Adolfo at Saks Fifth Avenue" with neat hand tacking. Adolfo was a Cuban-born designer during the 1950s - 90s. He was well known for his chic, yet whimsical clothing that matched his millinery looks for clients such as Babe Paley and Jackie Kennedy. During the 1960s he had a boutique of custom clothing in Saks Fifth Avenue and thus I believe this dress was a part of that era of Adolfo! There's honestly not a better LBD to wear to see Breakfast at Tiffany's. Chic with a modern sensibility topped with a whimsical element. I can see Audrey in this dress with a pretty black chapeau.
