GFV Shop: Current Favorites

Hello all! I am back with a new blog post detailing some of the latest Gal Friday Vintage Shop items. GFV Shop is a small online store geared towards charming vintage items, mainly from the 1920s - 1970s. I post new merchandise sporadically because I take on a very organic process when choosing things to post. I do not buy new pieces haphazardly. If I see an article of clothing or accessory that stands out to me for one reason or another, I will purchase it based on its uniqueness, label, and lovely vintage quality. Or sometimes, I realize that I own a precious piece from yesteryear that no longer matches my style or is a piece that I love but rarely wear.

I first purchased this lovely dress years ago and initially thought the dress was a 1950s number. Upon researching the label Julie Miller California, a dress line was established during the early 1960s and lasted through the 1970s. I love this crinkle fabric double-breasted dress in brown and white stripes. The big white buttons, tailored collar, and patch pockets add to its charm. I have a previous blog post in which I spotlighted this fabulous dress. It pairs well with retro-style kitten heels and vintage gloves.

This vintage baby blue full-length nightgown is in breathable cotton material. I love the details, such as the girly ruffled hem, embroidered scalloped neckline, and small ribbon. A bit unsure of the era of this nightgown. If I had to guess, I'd say it is a 1970s number or may even be more modern with a retro feel to it. If this were my size, I'd keep this little number to myself! I've been on the hunt for easy-flowing, comfortable nightgowns for myself.

This super cute vintage rhinestone hat pin is an unusual purchase for me. I bought it on a limb to motivate myself to wear vintage hats more. Needless to say, that plan failed miserably. But I figured someone else who is more of a hat wearer might appreciate this little number. If I had to guess, I'd say this is from the 1950s/60s. This hat pin serves both functionality and a little glamour.

I thought I'd share this luxurious ad from 1898 that showcases an array of fabulous hat pins. These pieces include large, flashy rhinestones as well. It is always exciting to date pieces and discovering the origins of specific details.

The last item that I'm going to showcase is this elegant gold 1940s Volupté compact. The design has stripes with a lovely pattern along the border. The compact has some of the vintage loose powder (which can be cleaned out if desired) and a mirror in excellent condition.

Volupté was an accessory and vanity maker established during the 1920s but reached its peak during the 1940s/50s for its luxurious and functional compacts. Vintage collectors consider these compacts of value. There are simple ways to take out the vintage powder, clean out the container, and replace the old powder with the one you use. Vintage accessories such as compacts and lipstick holders are a lot more glamorous compared to modern-day ones.

The photograph above showcases a gorgeous Volupté ad in Harper's Bazaar's October 1948 issue. The ad features Rita Hayworth during her press run The Loves of Carmen (1948), which she starred in with Glenn Ford.
